About the Item

Wire training mask with padded canvas bib, used for bayonet instruction during WWI. This rare protective mask was employed in military training exercises during the First World War, particularly in the instruction of bayonet combat. The design features a heavy-gauge wire cage forming the face guard, reinforced with vertical bars at the mouth opening. Beneath, a quilted canvas bib provided protection to the neck and chest, while a leather strap secured the piece in place. These masks allowed soldiers to practice close-quarters thrusts and parries in controlled conditions while minimizing injury.
