About the Item

A sumptuously bound copy of this noted work, presented here in a highly decorative Bumpus binding, with exquisite gilt detail and watered silk pastedowns. The 1907 edition of the work. First published in this form by Quaritch in 1859. Part of the Golden Treasury Series. In a lavish full morocco binding, with a repeated orange segment motif and watered silk and gilt doublures. 'The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam' was the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his 1859 translation of the Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam. Fitzgerald's was the first English translation. However, Fitzgerald's translations are fairly loose, he referred to his work on them as 'transmogrification'. Some consider that his translation of 'Rubaiyat' could be considered as Fitzgerald's own original poetry that are simply loosely based on Khayyam's quatrains. An extremely bright and highly decorative copy of this work. In a bumpus binding, with exceptional gilt detail to the boards and spine. Externally in excellent condition. Fading to the spine as is expected with green morocco. The odd spot to the doublures. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning.
