About the Item

Catalog accompanying an important April 1965 NYU exhibition of Ronald Bladen, Al Held, Knox Martin, George Sugarman, and David Weinrib, held at the Loeb Student Center. 8vo (6.75 × 9 inches), stapled red printed wrappers, illustrated in black-and-white. WIth a foreword by curator Ruth Gurin and a substantial essay by Irving Sandler, “Concrete Expressionism,” running throughout the catalog and discussing the five artists individually. Sandler situates their work between Abstract Expressionism and the emerging geometric and object-based tendencies of the 1960s, defining what he termed “Concrete Expressionism.” Each illustrated work is accompanied by full curatorial information—title, date, dimensions, and materials—with a short biography and bibliography for each artist. An unusually early document of Sandler’s critical engagement with Bladen and Held and of a transitional moment between Abstract Expressionism, geometric abstraction, and what would soon be identified as Minimalism. Scarce.
