About the Item

Author Koichi Takada, Text by Philip Jodidio The first monograph on the Japanese-born, Sydney-based architect, celebrated for his innovative holistic approach to design, nature, and urbanism. Koichi Takada is part of a new generation of architects striving to bring nature back into the urban environment—an approach he developed after living in Tokyo, New York, and London. His architecture reconnects people to the natural environment, drawing inspiration from organic forms and local contexts. This elegant volume showcases a series of Takada’s recent projects, illustrating the unique way his talent connects the natural and the designed, and how it has evolved over the last ten years. Beautiful photographs of buildings and interiors juxtapose against sketches and images of nature—illustrating the aesthetic inspirations behind the designs and the way they embody light, air, and even sound. Philip Jodidio’s texts guide readers through the range of spaces that span from the interiors of the award-winning National Museum of Qatar in Doha and Urban Forest in Brisbane, the “greenest residential building in Australia,” to striking buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, China, and the construction of a new space in Tokyo. This unique architectural journey will inspire readers to see architecture with a new mindset. About The Author Koichi Takada graduated from AA School of Architecture, London, and established his own practice, Koichi Takada Architects, in 2008. Philip Jodidio is a specialist in contemporary architecture. As well as having been the editor in chief of the French art magazine Connaissance des Arts for more than twenty years, he is the author of over 100 books on architecture and art.

Illusion in Design: New Trends in Architecture and Interiors

Illusion in Design: New Trends in Architecture and Interiors

By Rizzoli International Publications

Located in New York, NY

Author Paul Gunther and Gay Giordano Cutting-edge examples of the use of optical illusion in design—from trompe l’oeil to anamorphosis—to solve various challenges, be they space or budget related, or that act as aesthetic features in architecture and the fields that rub elbows with it: art, design, and furniture. This magical volume presents the startling world of illusion in design as employed by today’s architects, interior designers, furniture designers, and others at work bending the appearance of reality for purposes of aesthetics or practicality or fun. From a faux bookcase that masks a room or Prohibition-style bar, to the mind-boggling Escher-like effects achieved by Casa Ceramica, whose optical illusion of a floor dips into valleys and rises into mounds (but is in reality flat), the book is a revelation and an inspiration. It offers to us the possibility that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined—even in our own homes. The authors look at residences across the globe, as well as spaces beyond the home, that utilize a myriad of surprising techniques. Included are projects by conceptual designers such as Studio Malka and Vector Architects, as well as established practitioners such as Ferguson and Shamamian, G. P. Schafer, Peter Pennoyer...

Furniture by Architects Foreword by Stephen Crafti (Book)

Furniture by Architects Foreword by Stephen Crafti (Book)

Located in North Yorkshire, GB

'Furniture by Architects' reveals how the same fundamental principles used in building design can be applied on a much smaller scale, resulting in pieces of furniture that embrace function, beauty and context to become objects of art. For centuries, architects have turned their hand to custom furniture in a practice that has resulted in a number of iconic designs, including the timeless Eames Lounge and Ottoman and the ubiquitous Barcelona chair created by Mies van der Rohe for his acclaimed Barcelona Pavilion. 'Furniture by Architects' beautifully illustrates bespoke design by some of the world s leading architects, who are increasingly designing furniture as clients seek interiors customised to specific needs. Foster + Partners' 520 Armchair for Walter Knoll has the texture and comfort found in a traditional leather armchair, while the Liquid Glacial Dining & Coffee Table by Zaha Hadid Design...

Architecture, Not Architecture Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Architecture, Not Architecture Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Located in New York, NY

The first comprehensive monograph on the cross-disciplinary practice including over 100 built and ephemeral works Since its founding in 1981, New York-based studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has designed some of the world’s most revered civic spaces and cultural institutions. Their practice covers architecture, urban design, installation art, performance, digital media, and print. From the renowned High Line in New York City to the upcoming V&A East Storehouse in London to some of their earliest projects like the Blur building designed for the 2002 Swiss Expo, DS+R explores alternative strategies in space-making that engage and surprise on a global scale. Designed by DS+R as a pair of structurally conjoined volumes, this monograph invites readers to bridge different modes of production and reconsider the limits of architecture. The unique binding allows each volume to be read individually or in parallel by unfolding the book at the spine. Special crossover layouts link the two volumes with shared obsessions. The monograph features layouts by design consultancy 2x4, with photography by Iwan Baan and Matthew Monteith amongst other photographers. It also includes new dialogues with visionaries from other creative fields, including artist Edmund de Waal, art critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator Paola Antonelli, actor Alan Cumming...
