Antique Chinese Export Black and Gold Lacquer Folding Games Board. A mid-19th-century Chinese export Chinoiserie-decorated games board, featuring a chess and draughts board on the exterior and a backgammon board within, richly painted with flowers and scenes from Chinese life. This beautifully crafted antique Chinese export lacquer folding games board is finished in striking black and gold with exceptional Chinoiserie decoration. This rare 19th-century piece is both functional and highly decorative, making it an impressive addition to any collection or interior. The exterior forms a chess and draughts board, featuring 6 cm black and gold squares with an elegant gilt-decorated border. The board is richly embellished with traditional Chinese scenes set against a deep black lacquer ground. The sides are similarly decorated with gilt landscapes and figures, reflecting the fine craftsmanship associated with Canton export lacquerware. Opening the board reveals a beautifully decorated backgammon playing surface, finished in vibrant colours and intricate gilt detailing. Produced for the export market during the mid-19th century, this style of folding games board combines practicality with the refined artistry of Chinese lacquer work. Large Antique Staunton Style Chess Figures. A large Staunton style chess set with Ebonised and Boxwood weighted chess pieces. The pieces with wide bases for added stability, underside of each chess piece being covered with felt allowing the pieces to slide more easily across the chess board. The chess set comprises of thirty-two pieces, four Knights featuring the head and neck of a horse. Two kings, being the tallest pieces at 11½ cm high, both with a crown topped with a cross whilst the two Queens feature a coronet topped with a tiny ball (10 cm high). The four Rooks are towers (castles) with a crenelation top and the four Bishops with mitres. The sixteen Pawns are the smallest pieces at 5½ cm high and are topped by a plain ball.
