About the Item

FOR RARE BOOK COLLECTORS, PARIS SCHOLARS, MEDIA SCHOLARS, LOVERS OF PRINT MEDIA AND LOVERS OF PARIS, AND ITS HISTORY, PARTICULARLY: THE FRANCO-AMERICAN CONNECTION, LITERARY, AND JOURNALISTIC. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Paris Metro magazine, a fortnightly (twice a month) tabloid in the old “underground “ American newspapers of the day existed ebulliently, dramatically, from June 1976- Dec 1978. Its influence then with the French cognoscenti was outsize. French filmmakers, designers, and the litterati were rapt. The government was not, entirely: the Metro’s phone was tapped on occasion, due, probably to articles critical of the French medical and telephone systems and examined by this young group of fiery writers who were all nonetheless utterly in love with Parisian life. Founded by three American journalists educated at Columbia School of Journalism and previously employed by Time Life, Business Week and other magazines of the era including New Times and New York Magazine, it offered high quality journalism and perspective, along with a hefty dose of investigative enquiry, often deep. Indeed, it has been credited with introducing the very notion of investigative journalism to France. Housed in a 17th century hotel particulier, in the then ignored and semi derelict Marais, the Metro became a talent magnet. A number of staff members and contributors have gone on to wide recognition and fame, best-selling investigative political author Craig Unger, New York Times stellar correspondent/bureau chief Roger Cohen, famed trekker and writer of the Idiot and the Odyssey trilogy, Joel Stratte-McClure, among them. More than a magazine -- not unlike National Lampoon-- it became a scene, a magnetic place, an idea, and for a brief few years, an icon. Karl Lagerfeld was an early fan, featured on one cover; Henry Miller on another, in an issue which held one of his last interviews. Many designers, distinguished chefs, art galleries produced invitations to the Metro. It had influence, and the champagne flowed. A leading daily newspaper owner (Le Matin) loaned it money during a cash flow crisis, an unheard-of gesture. It was loved. The Metro courtyard attracted a flow of talented visitors. Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone, Beat poet Gregory Corso casually came by. For actors, writers, photographers, filmmakers in the know, the Paris Metro courtyard became a Paris destination.
