An English Staffordshire pastille burner, circa 1830-1860. These earthenware pieces were used for burning aromatic pastille lozenges to cover the noxious odors of everyday Victorian Era living. Pastille burners were shaped as dovecotes, cottages, churches, castles, and flower-covered summer houses. The smoke from the burning pastille flowed through the cut-out windows or chimneys of these follies, scenting damp and musky rooms. This example shows a yellow roofed cottage with three windowed chimneys. The roof shows a Pagoda influence. Applied flowers and bocage, columns support the front porch roof. Cut-outs on the rear of the cottage for Pastille placement. Beautifully applied bocage and flower heads, gilded accents. 6 in. L x 4.5 in. W x 7 in. The piece was then retailed by Garrard & Co, who once worked in collaboration with Asprey, producing luxury jewellery and silver for an elite clientele. Carrying import marks for London in 1927 by Israel Segalov, this wonderful pair of Sterling Silver Knights On Horseback, are handsomely modelled. Each measures roughly 12.25"(31cm) tall, by 12.5"(32cm) wide, by 4.5"(11.5cm) deep, and the pair together weigh 96 troy ounces. The design for the Knights is taken from a relief which can be found at the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I in the 'Hofkirche' of Innsbruck in Germany. The relief shows Emperor Maximilian I at the Battle of the Spurs (also known as the (second) Battle of the Guinegate), and was created by Albrecht Durer. The knights are believed to depict Emperor Maximilian I & King Ferdinand I.
