About the Item

A superb quality compact size Sublime Harmony antique music box made by George Baker of Geneva, Switzerland, c. 1885. This is a fantastic sounding box. The musical movement features two combs in Sublime Harmony arrangement such that they play with a beautiful harmony. It has wonderful range and excellent pinning so that there is a very rich quality to the music. It plays six operatic and popular tunes as listed on the original tunesheet mounted to the interior of the lid. The musical movement is also first class and has a number of extra features: a tune selector, speed regulator, tune indicator, and double spring for longer playing. It also has an unusual safety mechanism on the right hand end of the cylinder to prevent it going for a ‘run’. These features are normally reserved for larger high end music boxes so it is a sign of the excellent quality of this music box that it boasts them all at a small domestic size. The case is correspondingly exquisite, veneered in richly patterned walnut with boxwood stringing and a brass motif inlay to the lid. There is a maker’s label for George Baker to the interior, and it even retains its original burgundy leather tab for the interior dustlid, embossed with BT (for Baker Troll, the name of the partnership before George Baker ventured into business on his own). A magnificent music box, all original, in fully restored condition.
