About the Item

Spearmint green enameled grocer's scale manufactured in the Soviet era, 1960s, by Metripond, a Hungarian precision instrument maker. The scale features a boldly proportioned trapezoidal dial housing with a glass-screened arc dial marked in dekagrams (0 to 100), with Hungarian-language instructions printed across the face. Two cream-colored platters accompany the unit: one round dish and one rectangular tray, both mounted on adjustable arms. Adjustable leveling feet at the base allowed shopkeepers to calibrate the scale on uneven surfaces, a standard requirement for certified commercial use. Metripond (formally Metripond Mérleggyár) was a Budapest-based manufacturer producing certified weighing instruments for commercial and industrial use throughout the mid-20th century. Scales of this type were standard equipment in Soviet-bloc grocery stores, markets, and cooperatives through the 1960s and 1970s, built to state measurement standards and subject to official calibration. The bold green enamel finish and utilitarian construction reflect the functional industrial aesthetic common to Eastern European commercial goods of the period. The scale shows wear consistent age and use.
