Museum Quality Victorian Surgical Prosthetic Limb by W. H. Spratt 19th Century
Museum Quality Victorian Surgical Prosthetic Limb by W. H. Spratt 19th Century

Museum Quality Victorian Surgical Prosthetic Limb by W. H. Spratt 19th Century

Located in Nottingham, GB

This rare Victorian prosthetic support, crafted by William Henry Spratt, represents a remarkable example of 19th-century innovation in orthopedic and surgical engineering. Operating from London’s medical district, Spratt was a highly regarded surgical machinist, producing trusses, orthopaedic supports, and prosthetic limbs for private patients. The brass collar bears his engraved mark: “W. H. Spratt, 14 Brook St, Hanover Sq.” Historical records confirm Spratt’s active practice: he appears in the 1861 London census as a Surgical Machinist living with his family in Paddington, while trade directories list him as a truss maker, elastic stocking maker, and surgical instrument maker. His will of 1895 further validates his role in the medical trade. The prosthetic itself is masterfully constructed from hardwood. A tall shaft rises to a crescent-shaped knee rest, padded with leather and velvet, designed for below-knee amputees. The knee-rest design allowed users to transfer weight through the knee joint rather than the residual limb, reducing strain and improving mobility. The carved grip, formed directly from the timber, enhances both usability and visual appeal, reflecting Spratt’s combination of functional engineering and careful craftsmanship. This object is more than a medical instrument; it is a survivor of Victorian surgical ingenuity and a tangible reminder of personal resilience. With its original materials intact and maker’s mark clearly legible, the prosthetic offers collectors a direct connection to the history of Victorian medicine...

19th Century French Black Forest Carved Walnut Wall Barometer Thermometer

Located in Dallas, TX

This striking antique French Black Forest–style barometer thermometer was crafted in France circa 1880 from richly carved solid walnut. Designed as a vertical wall-mounted piece, the instrument showcases exuberant naturalistic carving characteristic of the Black Forest tradition, including finely detailed game birds, acorns, oak leaves, scrolling foliage, and a carved dog’s head crest at the top. The sculptural relief carving is deep and expressive, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and artistry. The central circular aneroid barometer is set behind a glazed dial with French weather indications, framed by an intricately carved surround. Above, the original thermometer is housed within a rectangular opening fitted with a gilt scale plate. The walnut surface throughout displays a warm, well-developed patina, enhancing the depth of the carving and emphasizing the dramatic silhouettes and layered foliage. The reverse retains its original wooden backing and mounting configuration. This antique barometer...

In 1876, aged 30, he started a telegraph repair shop with help from his friend Carl Johan Andersson. The shop was in central Stockholm (No. 15 on Drottninggatan, the principal shopping street) and repaired foreign-made telephones. In 1878 Ericsson began making and selling his own telephone equipment. His phones were not technically innovative, as most of the inventions had already been made in the US. In 1878, he made an agreement to supply telephones and switchboards to Sweden's first telecom operating company, Stockholms Allmänna Telefonaktiebolag. Also in 1878, local telephone importer Numa Peterson hired Ericsson to adjust some telephones from the Bell Telephone Company. This inspired him to buy a number of Siemens telephones...
