1880s Toys and Dolls

Extraordinary Jumeau automaton doll with music box, made in France in the late 19th century. The head indicates that it was made by Jumeau thanks to the engraving on the back of the doll's neck: "JUMEAU TETE DEPOSE Bte S.G.D.G." The hair is a platinum blonde style made of mohair. The eyes are amber-tinted glass. The clothing is a kind of short bustle dress with a white lace petticoat, an overskirt, and a bodice in maroon satin with cream-colored ribbons. It features movement in both arms: the right arm makes the gesture of waving a fan, and the left arm makes the gesture of putting on glasses; it also turns its face slightly. It sits on a base consisting of a music box with a mechanical movement. An original inscription on the bottom indicates the title of the melody: "Marche des volontaires" (March of the Volunteers).
