About the Item

French Art Deco Patinated Pine Folding Screen / Room Divider Attributed to Jomaine Baumann, 1940s A sculptural and beautifully patinated French Art Deco freestanding room divider or folding screen, attributed to Jomaine Baumann and dating to the 1940s. Crafted in richly toned pine with finely ribbed vertical detailing, this highly architectural screen possesses a wonderfully fluid silhouette, with gently undulating tops that create rhythm and movement across the piece. Elegant yet functional, it embodies the timeless sophistication of French Art Deco design while feeling remarkably contemporary in form. Recently cleaned, sensitively restored and re-polished, the screen retains all the warmth, patina and honest character acquired over decades of use, while presenting beautifully for modern interiors. The rich reddish-brown timber tones and softly aged surface lend depth and atmosphere, making it equally suited to minimalist, mid-century, wabi-sabi or more layered interiors. Designed with flexibility in mind, the screen can be folded, coiled, curved or fully extended, allowing it to adapt effortlessly to different spaces and functions. It works beautifully as a room divider, dressing screen, backdrop, architectural partition or decorative statement piece in both residential and commercial settings. There is something strikingly modern in its form. The organic curves and sculptural rhythm echo the sensibilities later explored by designers such as Charles & Ray Eames and Alvar Aalto, reinforcing the enduring relevance of this design language. Whether used to frame a seating area, soften an open-plan space, or create a dramatic backdrop for a chair, console, lighting or curated collection of objects, it brings warmth, texture and quiet theatre to an interior. A rare and highly decorative example of French Art Deco design with a beautifully architectural presence. The screen is shown photographed with an Arne Jacobsen chair from a set we currently hold in stock (available separately and not included in the sale), shown purely for scale.
