About the Item

This fantastic antique trunk from the mid-19th century once belonged to a nomadic traveler of the Tibetan Plateau or the Himalayas. One of the most unique items in our collection, the wooden chest is encased in a lacquered hide sheath that insulated and protected its contents during long trips. The hide covering is stitched into the wooden frame with leather cord, beautifully braided along multiple seams for dramatic texture. The chest opens by a removable top panel and secures with hinged brass hardware, designed for use with a padlock. Primitive and richly aged, the one-of-a-kind trunk lives on as a rare collector's item with history and depth of character. Some tears to hide covering.
