About the Item

Bruno Mathsson – Early Book Stand, 1941 A rare and beautifully preserved early book stand designed by the renowned Swedish designer and architect Bruno Mathsson in 1941, and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. Executed in ash and beech, the piece displays Mathsson’s characteristic combination of sculptural simplicity, functionality and refined craftsmanship. Its gently curved construction creates an elegant and organic form while providing a practical support for books, magazines or sheet music. This example is particularly noteworthy for retaining its original paper manufacturer’s label underneath, an important detail confirming its early production and provenance. The model was designed and produced in 1941, placing this piece among Mathsson’s early works and making it an especially desirable example for collectors of Scandinavian design. Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was one of Sweden’s most important modernist furniture designers and architects. Born in Värnamo into a family of master cabinetmakers, he learned traditional woodworking in his father Karl Mathsson’s workshop before developing his own highly distinctive approach to furniture design. His work combined Swedish craftsmanship with Functionalism, innovative woodworking techniques and an exceptional understanding of ergonomics. Mathsson became internationally recognised for his pioneering bentwood furniture, particularly his sculptural seating designs. His work was exhibited internationally, including in Paris, and his furniture later entered important museum collections. He remains one of the defining figures of Swedish Modernism and Scandinavian design. An exceptionally charming early piece, this 1941 book stand offers a rare glimpse into Mathsson’s formative period and his search for a new, functional and distinctly Scandinavian design language.
