About the Item

The Garrus district is located in the southern tip of Azerbaijan, with Bijar being its capital. The oldest examples from this area are woven on an all wool foundation, and are ornamented by a large scale pattern of split-leaf strapwork arabesques, which are superimposed onto a plane of directionally arranged flowering plants. This is a pattern that first appears on the so-called 'Vase' carpets, woven in the Safavid court workshops during the first half of the 17th century. The vast majority of Garrus Bijar rugs are found in very large formats, typically with a dark indigo blue field which contrasts the rust red arabesques. This rare, small example with an unusual madder red background is further distinguished by the fact that it maintained the same grandiose large-scale pattern we see on the oversized carpets. The charming, informal rendition of this classical pattern is a feature of the best and most sought after village weavings of the area.
