About the Item

This exceptional Antique Caucasian Seychour Rug is a museum-quality example of one of the most sought-after weaving traditions of the Eastern Caucasus. Woven during the mid-19th century, it displays the extraordinarily refined drawing, crisp geometry, and luminous natural colors that have made Seychour rugs favorites among serious collectors. The composition is anchored by three monumental octagonal medallions connected by elegant geometric devices, all set against a beautifully saturated rose-pink field. Between the medallions are finely drawn secondary motifs, including stylized ram's horns, protective tribal emblems, rosettes, and small hooked ornaments that symbolize strength, fertility, and protection. Every motif is executed with remarkable precision, reflecting the exceptionally fine weave characteristic of the finest Seychour workshops. The deep indigo spandrels provide dramatic contrast to the vibrant field, while being filled with small geometric diamonds and latch-hook motifs that create movement throughout the composition. The broad ivory main border is especially impressive, decorated with alternating stylized starburst and floral motifs in soft blues, greens, coral, ivory, and burgundy, enclosed by multiple guard borders that frame the rug with remarkable balance and elegance. The color palette is outstanding, featuring rich rose, coral, ivory, deep indigo, sky blue, turquoise, sage green, and warm burgundy, all produced from natural vegetable dyes that have mellowed beautifully over more than a century and a half. The harmony and brilliance of these colors are hallmarks of the finest early Caucasian weavings. The weave is exceptionally fine and tightly executed, allowing for remarkable clarity in every geometric detail. The wool is soft, lustrous, and of outstanding quality, while the rug remains in virtually perfect condition, an extraordinary state of preservation for a textile of this age. Such condition greatly enhances both its rarity and desirability among collectors. Whether displayed as a distinguished hallway rug or acquired as an investment-quality collectible, this antique Seychour represents the highest level of Caucasian tribal weaving. Its combination of exceptional craftsmanship, sophisticated design, superb natural colors, and remarkable preservation makes it a truly outstanding example of 19th-century Caucasian textile art.
