About the Item

Mid-Century Stripe Kilim, Caspian Region, Circa 1950, 6'8" x 14'9", Three-Panel Undyed Wool, Earth Tones Origin: Caspian coast coastal region Circa: Circa 1950 Type: Kilim (flatweave) rug, narrow-loom, three-panel construction, rustic tribal village origins Materials: Wool, undyed and naturally colored in rich earth tones of chocolate brown and sandy beige, hand-woven Dimensions: 6'8" x 14'9" (203 x 450 cm, or 80 x 177 inches) Condition: Good This is a banded kilim measuring 6'8" x 14'9" (203 x 450 cm, or 80 x 177 inches), woven circa 1950 in the Caspian coastal region, using wool on a wool foundation. The composition is composed of three narrow-loom panels sewn side by side, each carrying an arrangement of equal-width horizontal bands alternating between deep chocolate brown and warm sandy beige in undyed, naturally colored wool. Rustic and textured underfoot, with the surface irregularity characteristic of village flatweave production. The graphic simplicity and neutral two-tone palette suit contemporary, minimalist, and modernist interiors. The design is entirely abstract, with alternating bands of dark and light undyed wool and forgoing conventional motifs or ornamentation. The slight variation between panels in stripe register and surface texture reflects the improvisational quality of narrow-loom weaving and gives the composition its visual energy. Rugs of this type draw frequent comparison to the Color Field paintings of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, and their minimalist qualities attracted significant collector and scholarly attention beginning in the 1980s and 1990s. They are now among the most sought-after heritage kilims for contemporary decorating. Background This kilim belongs to a long-overlooked group of weavings produced in the subtropical zones near the Caspian Sea. Stylistically distinct from other regional traditions, they forgo conventional rug motifs and dyes in favor of pure stripe compositions woven on narrow looms — a format common among nomadic weavers, allowing individual panels to be completed quickly and transported easily between seasonal pastures. At 6'8" x 14'9", this is a large-format example of the type, well suited to anchoring a room. Condition and Use Good condition. As a flatweave, a rug pad is recommended on hard surfaces. For higher-traffic areas, the kilim can be fixed to a backing for additional stability. Suitable for floor use or display as a monumental wall hanging or bed cover.
