About the Item

This vintage Caucasian kilim embodies the authentic artistry of tribal village weaving traditions. Handwoven in the Caucasus region using organic hand-spun wool and natural vegetable dyes, it features a striking stripe composition enriched with geometric motifs. The palette of abrash blue, brick red, warm brown, saffron yellow, and ivory displays beautiful tonal variation, a hallmark of genuine hand-dyed wool. Reminiscent of Shahsavan kilims from Northwest Persia, this piece showcases a rhythmic arrangement of patterned and solid bands that convey both movement and balance. Antique Turkmen Yomut Soumak Kilim, Handwoven Wool, Geometric Stripe, 5' x 10'

Antique Turkmen Yomut Soumak Kilim, Handwoven Wool, Geometric Stripe, 5' x 10'

Located in Barrington, IL

An early 20th century Turkmen Yomut tribal kilim from Central Asia, distinguished by its refined geometric stripe composition and nuanced palette. The field is grounded in deep red tones, accented with rust, brown, ivory, and the highly prized 'Turkmen Blue' — a distinctive shade emblematic of the Yomut weaving tradition and among the most sought-after colors in Central Asian tribal collecting. Finely woven with precision, this flatweave exemplifies the disciplined craftsmanship of Yomut artisans. The Yomut are one of the great Turkmen tribal confederacies, their weavings distinguished from those of the Tekke by a somewhat darker palette, a preference for diamond-shaped guls, and the particularly fine quality of their hand-spun wool. Yomut flatweaves of this early 20th century vintage are increasingly difficult to find in good condition. Turkmen rugs, woven by the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribal peoples of Central Asia — principally the Tekke, Yomut, Ersari, Saryk, and Salor — are among the most instantly recognizable and actively collected tribal textiles in the world. Distinguished by their deep, saturated crimson fields, their repeating octagonal gul medallions, their exceptionally fine high-density pile, and the extraordinary quality of their hand-spun and vegetable-dyed wool, Turkmen rugs combine geometric precision with a richness of material quality that has made them prized from the bazaars of Bukhara to the auction rooms of New York and London.
