Hand knotted in wool, this 4x9 Afghan tribal kilim represents a new line of tribal carpets in the Modern Classics Collection by Rug & Kilim. Each piece represents the work of women weavers in Afghanistan, preserving the rich tradition of their centuries-old craft. On the design: Admirers of the craft may appreciate design elements inherent to the Afghan tribal design in this piece. This piece enjoys rich burgundy red, navy blue and salmon and teal tones in the field. This particular design draws inspiration from Persian Senneh rugs and translates their medallions and geometric-floral patterns beautifully to the more Afghani color palette. Keen eyes may further admire a mild textural detail in the pile, almost like a subdued high-and-low element in the pile, and a subtle sense of dimension therein that still plays so naturally with the movement and richness that underscores this piece. It’s a comfortable, personal piece, exemplary of primitivist, old-world patterns and the devoted tribal weavers who recapture their beauty.
