About the Item

A contemporary hand-knotted area rug that conceals a memento mori within a classical Sultanabad composition. At first glance the saffron-gold field reads as a traditional Persian-style allover design of palmettes, blossoming vines and arabesques in terracotta, indigo, ivory and green. Viewed as a whole, the same ornaments resolve into a large stylised skull: paired indigo rosettes form the eyes, a symmetrical floral cartouche the nose, and a row of woven motifs the teeth. A wide saffron border with leafy split-palmette scrolls frames the design on all four sides. Memento mori — Latin for "remember that you must die" — is one of the oldest and most enduring themes in art. Far from being morbid, it is a life-affirming idea: a reminder to live fully, value the present and appreciate beauty precisely because it is fleeting. For centuries artists expressed it by placing a skull alongside flowers, fruit and other emblems of abundance, as in the great Vanitas still lifes of the Baroque. This rug carries that tradition into the medium of the hand-knotted carpet, setting the skull amid a flourishing garden of blossoms — a quiet celebration of life through the very symbol of its limits. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from wool on a cotton foundation, the piece combines the format and palette of a 19th-century Ziegler Mahal with a modern trompe-l'œil concept — a collector's statement piece and a focal point for a living room, study, gallery or designer interior.
