About the Item

Material: Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation with natural vegetable dyes This elegant Antique Amritsar Carpet, woven circa 1880, is a beautiful example of the refined decorative carpets produced in Northern India during the late 19th century. Inspired by classical Persian designs yet unmistakably Indian in character, it displays the graceful drawing, soft color palette, and exceptional decorative appeal that have made early Amritsar carpets highly sought after by interior designers and collectors alike. The unusually desirable almost square format is one of the carpet's greatest attributes. Measuring 10' × 10'11", it is perfectly suited for large square living rooms, dining rooms, libraries, or grand entrance halls—sizes that are exceptionally difficult to find in authentic 19th-century carpets. The spacious ivory field is decorated with an elegant allover arrangement of scrolling vinery, palmettes, flowering stems, and delicate botanical motifs, all executed with remarkable balance and refinement. The absence of a dominant central medallion creates an open, harmonious composition that enhances the carpet's versatility in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The sophisticated palette features soft ivory, blush pink, muted rose, warm olive, pale sage, and subtle gold, creating a light, airy appearance that has mellowed beautifully over nearly 150 years. These gentle colors, achieved with natural vegetable dyes, are among the defining characteristics of the finest antique Amritsar carpets and contribute greatly to their timeless decorative appeal. The broad floral border, richly ornamented with scrolling vines, stylized palmettes, and elegant floral motifs, frames the composition beautifully while maintaining the carpet's refined and understated elegance. Every element reflects the influence of Persian classical design interpreted through the distinctive artistic vision of the Amritsar workshops. Handwoven from high-quality hand-spun wool, this carpet possesses a supple handle, excellent wool quality, and a refined weave. It remains in very good condition, showing only light, even wear consistent with its age while retaining excellent color, crisp drawing, and strong structural integrity. Because of its exceptional decorative qualities, rare square proportions, and sophisticated pastel palette, this antique Amritsar carpet is equally suitable for a fine period home, a luxury contemporary interior, or an important collection of decorative Oriental carpets.
