About the Item

This monumental antique Agra rug stands at the intersection of Indian Mughal artistry and classical Persian design, presenting a richly layered composition inspired by the great Safavid masterpieces. Woven in the historic workshops of Agra, it features a large central medallion surrounded by concentric floral cartouches, lotus blooms, cloudbands and radiating pendants—motifs that echo the visual language of the celebrated 16th-century Ardabil carpet. The marsala and rose-toned field is densely populated with botanical forms that appear to unfold across the surface: lotus blossoms, peonies, palmettes, and small rosettes arranged in rhythmic order. The palette—ranging from brick red and saffron to soft ivory and olive—derives from natural dyes and reflects the refined sensibility of Agra’s court weaving tradition. One remarkable element within this carpet is the inclusion of the poetic inscription found on the Ardabil rug, attributed to the Persian poet Hafez and traditionally accompanied by the name of the master-weaver Maqsoud of Kashan. Its presence situates this Agra rug within a lineage of historical homage, recalling a period when Mughal ateliers deliberately revived and reinterpreted classical Persian prototypes. In person, the rug conveys a deep sense of architectural balance: the medallion anchors the composition while the floral tracery seems to move outward in measured, almost celestial symmetry. Its scale makes it ideal for grand interiors—formal salons, libraries, dining rooms, or any setting where a commanding yet harmonious textile can structure the space. Clean, stable, and preserved with integrity, this rug offers not only decorative impact but also historical resonance. It is a substantial example of Agra weaving at its finest, embodying centuries of cultural dialogue between India and Persia.
