About the Item

The geometric designs of Berber carpets represent a veritable coded language, handed down from mother to daughter, telling the secret story of the woman who wove it within the household hearth. The carpets feature lozenges, triangles, straight and zig-zag stripes, simple and geometric designs. Each rug is a 'unique' book, all to be decoded, the result of individual creativity and representing first and foremost the phases of the life of the woman who created it, adolescence, marriage, pregnancy, sexuality. The rug is thus a secret diary, a manuscript, a life story, and once finished it becomes a house rug, a blanket, a tapestry, or it is sold and will carry its secret story with it. Made of wool, a good rug contains at least 480,000 knots in one square meter, and it took at least nine months to make. Taznakht carpets are colored using natural pigments: saffron, henna, mint. They are made of goat or dromedary hair wool, and the woman wove it by spending long hours kneeling in front of the loom.
