About the Item

Rare vintage Tuareg mat handmade in the Sahara in the 1980s by nomadic artisans of the Tuareg people. Woven with strips of palm (rush) wood and stitched with strips of natural leather, this mat embodies centuries of traditional Saharan craftsmanship. Originally used in nomadic tents to protect against heat and sand, Tuareg mats combine functionality and symbolism. Geometric patterns etched into the leather-such as lozenges, crosses and broken lines-represent spiritual values and tribal identities. With its generous dimensions (475×264 cm), this piece is ideal for furnishing elegant interiors, exhibition spaces or covered terraces. Its understated, textured style fits perfectly in ethnic, minimalist, or wabi-sabi settings. In good vintage condition, with signs of wear consistent with age and use. Never been restored. Each Afolki mat is personally selected in Morocco for authenticity, cultural value and quality craftsmanship. Ready shipping from Italy.
