About the Item

A rare 20th century Turkish Hereke rug with a gorgeous pale yellow field with a large central coat of arms of the Ottoman Empire. The emblem features an ornate cartouche surrounded by various elements of the state including two flags. The red flag of the Ottoman dynasty with a star and crescent and the green flag of the Islamic caliph. Behind the flags are a number of spears and other weapons, a scale, an anchor, the holy Quran, a lantern, and myriad other symbols. Hanging beneath the emblem are the medals of five of the Ottoman decorations. The border is extraordinary with a wide inner floral patterned stripe and a thinner stylized scrolling vine and floral patterned stripe.
