About the Item

Facebook Email Print X Pinterest A beautifully handwoven vintage Tabriz-design Persian area rug, hand-knotted in India during the third quarter of the 20th century, featuring a refined floral medallion design inspired by the grand tradition of 16th–17th century Persian court carpets. Set against a desirable cream field, the central medallion emerges in shades of French blue, green, brown, and pink — harmoniously balanced by surrounding floral motifs in navy blue, red, green, and caramel. The corner spandrels in French blue and caramel echo the central theme with complementary accent colors, while a cream border adorned with a continuation of the floral design frames the rug and enhances its classical symmetry. India's finest workshops have produced Tabriz-design carpets for generations, drawing on the vocabulary of the great Persian masters and executing their patterns with skill and fidelity — this piece exemplifies the best of that tradition. Vintage Karabagh Area Rug, Wool Pile, Floral Design, Caucasus, 1900s, 4' x 7'

Located in Barrington, IL

Vintage Karabagh area rug from the Armenian village weavers of the Caucasus mountains circa the early 1900s. The Karabagh rug has a wonderful and highly desirable and seeked allover pattern in an abrash brown background with a royal blue border with design accent colors in red, green, and yellow. It has a wonderful abrash brown/black field color which is a manifestation of the use of vegetable dyes which beautifully sets up the design of small flower heads in red, yellow, and green and variations of those colors resulting from the use of organic vegetable dyes which develop into various shades over time. The border is a gorgeous abrash royal blue. Truly a small gem from the Caucasus mountains. Vintage Indian Agra Rug, Handwoven Wool Pile, Allover Floral Design, 3' x 5'

Vintage Indian Agra Rug, Handwoven Wool Pile, Allover Floral Design, 3' x 5'

Located in Barrington, IL

This elegant vintage Indian Agra rug, woven in the early 1900s, features a classic allover floral pattern inspired by the refined aesthetics of 16th century Mughal court carpets — the scrolling vines, palmettes, and blossoms that have been at the heart of Indian carpet design since the great workshops of Akbar and Jahangir first established the tradition in the 16th century. Set against a navy blue field of considerable depth, the floral motifs are gracefully arranged in a symmetrical layout, with notable abrash — the natural variation in hand-dyed blue that adds visual depth and the unmistakable mark of genuine handcraft. The saturated red border frames the field with bold, confident contrast. Agra rugs, woven in the ancient Mughal capital of Agra in Northern India, represent the finest expression of the Indian carpet weaving tradition that was established under the great Mughal emperors of the 16th and 17th centuries. The workshops of Agra produced carpets for the imperial court and the great mansions of the Mughal aristocracy, drawing on Persian design vocabulary while developing an aesthetic distinctly their own — characterized by bold, large-scale medallion and floral formats, luminous color palettes, and the extraordinary quality of Indian wool. Antique Agra rugs from the 19th and early 20th centuries are among the most actively collected and widely admired Indian carpets in the world.
