About the Item

The Yuruk are nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes that primarily inhabit the lesser populated regions of eastern Anatolia. The word Yuruk translates in Turkish to pastoral nomad. Their weavings have excellent quality wool and have full thick piles. The designs contain stylized floral elements that have been translated into various geometric motifs. The source of their patterns, originally thought to be of Caucasian origin, were actually inspired by classical Anatolian concepts. This rug has three cruciform medallions inspired by those found in Sewan Kazak rugs on a magenta field within a dark chocolate palmette and vine border. The vivid magenta field color is a natural dye sourced from cochineal, a scale insect indigenous to that region, which lives on cacti and feeds on plant moisture and nutrients. 11' 1" x 4' 1".
