About the Item

A beautiful and highly decorative antique Turkish prayer rug featuring a striking raspberry-red stepped mihrab set against an ivory ground. The field is adorned with an elegant lattice of stylized floral forms and geometric blossoms, creating a lively yet harmonious composition. The spandrels contain traditional Anatolian symbolic motifs, while multiple finely drawn borders frame the design with remarkable precision. The rug displays the warm, saturated vegetable-dyed colors for which Anatolian village weavings are admired, including shades of crimson, ivory, indigo blue, soft yellow, and walnut brown. The wool is lustrous and finely knotted, and the rug retains exceptional clarity of design and outstanding preservation. Strong stepped mihrab (prayer niche) design. Ivory ground surrounding the niche. Rich raspberry-red field with geometric floral lattice. Stylized tulip and carnation motifs, common in Anatolian weaving. Narrow geometric guard borders and dark blue main border. Fine, tightly woven wool pile on a wool foundation. Excellent drawing and balanced proportions typical of village Anatolian rugs. The unusual pinkish-red field color and delicate lattice pattern suggest a refined village workshop rather than a coarse nomadic weaving. One feature I find particularly interesting is the small animal figures (goat-like forms) in the upper ivory field, which are not commonly seen in standard Ladik rugs and may indicate a more specific village origin within the Konya region. That detail makes the rug more collectible than a typical Anatolian prayer rug of the period.
