About the Item

Native to the town of Pirot in Southeast Serbia, flat-woven carpets form the region an essential functional, cultural, and aesthetic component of the Balkan region. Known for their vertical looms and playful designs and geometric patterns, antique Pirot flat-weave kilims have become a much sought-after commodity today. While the region may have missed knotting piled carpets, they have more than made up for it with their excellent hand-woven pileless kilims. The present example is possibly one of the largest hand-woven kilims in existence. Three rows of pistachio-colored flowerhead ornated medallions are flanked by 2 rows of blue grey medallions of the same type over a deep red field. Separating each row of medallions are tribal polychrome zigzags of peach, pistachio, muted madder, powder blue, and blue grey. Framing the center of the carpet is a main ivory border adorned by various tribal motifs. Surrounding the main border is a pair of deep-red border guards decorated with tribal polychrome lozenges. Despite the simplistic tribal designs employed, there is much to unearth in this playfully simplistic yet rich oversized flat-weave carpet.
