Title: Turkish Konya Tülü Rug, Mid-20th Century, 2'8" x 4'2", Undyed Mohair and Wool, Earth Tones Origin: Konya Province, Central Anatolia Circa: Mid-20th century Type: Tülü accent rug (long-pile tribal rug), also suitable as a decorative wall-hanging, bed cover, or throw throw blanket Materials: Mohair and wool, undyed and in its natural golden honey and chocolate brown tones Dimensions: 2'8" x 4'2" (81 x 127 cm, or 32 x 50 inches) Condition: Very good vintage; sides slightly uneven Provenance: Personal collection of a prominent Turkish dealer Mid-20th-century Turkish tülü from the Konya region, measuring 2'8" x 4'2" (81 x 127 cm, or 32 x 50 inches), woven in mohair and wool on a wool foundation with an exceptionally long, lustrous pile. The palette is composed entirely of undyed natural fibers: a warm golden honey field framed by a wide chocolate brown border, with a single bold abstract figure motif at center in dark brown. Silky soft owing to the mohair content, it is suitable for use as an accent rug, a decorative throw blanket, bed cover, or wall hanging. Design and Background The composition is spare: a wide chocolate brown border frames a camel field occupied by a single centrally placed stepped star figure in dark brown. Tülüs are handwoven with a compact weft structure and a long, shaggy pile. Occasionally woven from mohair, the rugs achieve an exceptional luster and softness not typically found in all-wool weavings. The pile catches light unevenly across the surface, producing a shifting, luminous quality. All colors are derived entirely from the natural pigmentation of the fiber. This rug was woven by ethnically Turkmen herding communities of central Anatolia, produced for domestic use rather than commercial sale. Their motifs reflect the weaver's own aesthetic preferences rather than workshop conventions, and early to mid-century examples retain a material integrity of materials and construction rarely matched by later productions. Condition and Use Very good vintage condition. No condition issues noted. Sides slightly uneven, consistent with artisanal village weaving. Pile remains thick, lustrous, and robust. Suitable for floor use; a rug pad is recommended on hard surfaces. Well suited to display as a wall hanging
