Made with hand-knotted wool in Turkey circa 1950-1960, this 5x7 vintage Hereke rug is from an exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim, enjoying large-scale arabesque medallions and floral patterns on a blue field with a borderless design. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will note this piece and those from its series are a rare departure from other Hereke rugs of more traditional structure, and some like this piece almost resemble fragments of larger rugs in their design. Sharply drawn arabesque medallions in raspberry red and rust tones repeat against a teal blue ground, with equally fine cream white vinery floral patterns in between—a fabulous look with natural dimensionality and movement alike. Admirers of the craft will note how the deliberate absence of borders allows the design to suggest continuation beyond the carpet's edges—an inventive mid-century interpretation of classical Turkish infinite pattern theory.
