About the Item

This 6x10 antique Khotan rug, hand-knotted in wool circa 1920–1929, features two geometric medallions on a deep indigo field framed by finely detailed borders. Soft terracotta, ivory, and camel tones lend balance to its classic design. On the Design: This antique Khotan rug is defined by a balanced design centered on two large geometric medallions arranged along the vertical axis of the field. The spacious indigo ground is enriched with orderly rows of stylized floral motifs that create a quiet rhythm between the medallions, while angular corner spandrels reinforce the design with clarity and symmetry. A sequence of geometric and floral borders frames the field with measured precision, allowing each element to remain distinct without overwhelming the overall design. The palette pairs a deep indigo ground with softened terracotta, camel, ivory, and muted blue, creating a refined contrast that highlights both the medallions and the intricate field motifs. Geometric ornament is balanced by restrained floral detailing, giving the design both structure and warmth. The result is a thoughtful interpretation of the Khotan weaving tradition, where symmetry, open space, and carefully proportioned ornament come together with enduring elegance.
