About the Item

An exquisite early 20th century French Aubusson flatweave rug with a cream field featuring a circular medallion. At the center is a two-handled urn on a blue ground, enclosed by a pink ring with a pearl border. Radiating from this roundel are four tan cornucopias arranged in a star formation, alternating with green garlands and leafy branches. The circular border displays a wave pattern, framed by beige spandrels decorated with scrolling leaves and floral sprays. Woven from wool using traditional flatweave techniques, this piece reflects the neoclassical design of French workshops. Aubusson rugs, originating in the town of Aubusson, were favored by nobility for their elegant compositions. The detail in the shading of the blossoms demonstrates the skill of the weaver.
