About the Item

One of the few remaining original Art Nouveau carpets from Vienna. Hand-knotted – the craftsmanship clearly identifies Backhausen & Sons in Vienna. The stylized floral pattern reflects the design language of leading Viennese architects (Hoffmann, Wagner, Loos, Prutscher, Ofner, etc.) during the Fin de Siècle. There is one other surviving original from this period – it is offered by MasterArt, a well-known Viennese gallery. However, it is a different size and has a blue base color. This design is also now available as a new knot (also in blue and yet another size). The original offered here has a red base color. The wool is dyed with natural plant dyes. Size: 3.40 x 2.40 meters. Given its modern design and its excellent condition, this carpet is a significant collector's item of museum quality.
