About the Item

ARNE JACOBSEN (1902–1971) & FRITZ HANSEN (MANUFACTURER) from the 1963 edition Dimensions: “No. 3317” swivel armchair, known as the “Egg,” designed in 1958, featuring a four-legged base made of cast aluminum resting on black ABS glides, a fiberglass shell upholstered in original black leather, and a removable seat cushion. A “No. 3317” or “Egg” swivel armchair, The armchair has retained its original leather upholstery; the top of the ottoman was refurbished—as it was damaged—using similar vintage leather. The “Egg” armchair was originally designed in 1958 for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The curved shape of the “Egg” was quite unusual for its time, and it arose from an equally unusual reason: Jacobsen wanted the hotel’s interior to contrast directly with its modernist exterior. The “Egg” armchair is the most striking element of his overall design for the hotel and has become a globally successful design classic. It breaks with all design conventions thanks to its curved shape, which Jacobsen achieved by molding the internal foam structure and covering it with upholstery. Comfort is the Egg armchair’s main asset and key selling point. It features high armrests and a padded, enveloping seat, ideal for sitting for long periods.
