About the Item

Iconic “Stella” lounge chair designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1956 and produced by OCA, Brazil. Considered one of Rodrigues’ early upholstered designs, the Stella already reveals many of the qualities that would define his mature language: generous proportions, structural clarity, comfort, and a distinctly Brazilian use of noble woods. The chair features a solid jacarandá rosewood structure with elegant angled legs, exposed side frames, and gently curved arms that create a soft, enveloping silhouette. Its low and relaxed profile gives the piece a welcoming presence, while the open wooden sides emphasize the balance between lightness and strength. The upholstered body is composed of a generous seat cushion, padded arms, and a loose back cushion with button-tufted detailing. The contrast between the sculptural jacarandá frame and the soft upholstery highlights Rodrigues’ ability to combine architectural structure with domestic comfort. Originally designed in 1956, the Stella chair occupies an important place within Sergio Rodrigues’ early production and within the history of Brazilian modern furniture. The piece reflects the designer’s search for an authentic Brazilian identity in design, combining robust materials, relaxed proportions, and refined craftsmanship. We currently have two units available. One unit has been polished and reupholstered in off-white bouclé fabric, while the other remains in its current vintage condition, preserving its existing upholstery and patina. A highly collectible Brazilian modern lounge chair, suitable for residential interiors, gallery spaces, and sophisticated corporate environments. Brazil, 1956.
