About the Item

A rare desk chair by Hendrik Wouda, dating from the 1920s and executed in solid oak with black-stained details. This is a strong and architectural piece of Dutch modernist furniture. The chair has the calm geometry and structural clarity that make Wouda’s work so distinctive: broad oak planes, straight legs, a firm horizontal armrest line and a graphic back with black vertical slats. The construction is sober but highly expressive. Nothing feels decorative for decoration’s sake; every element has weight, rhythm and purpose. The design belongs firmly to the world of the Haagse School, or The Hague School, the Dutch Art Deco movement that developed in the Netherlands in the 1920s. Wouda’s furniture often shows the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, especially in the strong horizontals and geometry that reads as architecture. This chair would be particularly beautiful with a Pander desk or a Dutch modernist writing table from the same period. It has exactly the right presence for a study, gallery, library or collector’s interior: serious, elegant and monumental. The dark stained armrests and black slats create a strong graphic contrast with the warm oak. The oak used is thick, warm and full of character, with the woodgrain itself providing ornament. This is typical of Wouda’s best work, where material and proportion do the talking. An interesting aspect of this chair is that it appears to represent an earlier version of a Wouda design. Compared with the later, more resolved Pander/Wouda model, the construction here is simpler and more direct. The black vertical slats are visibly fixed, less fully integrated than in the later version, where the black slats are carried more continuously across the sides and the horizontal stretchers overlap the vertical elements. It shows Wouda’s design language still in development, before it became fully systematised. See the last picture to compare with a very similar Wouda desk chair. The chair is in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The oak presents beautifully, with a warm colour and strong grain. The upholstered seat could benefit from reupholstery, and can be expertly and traditionally redone on request (in any desired colour and frabric). A rare and highly decorative early Wouda piece, ideal as a desk chair, collector’s chair or architectural accent in a refined modernist interior.
