About the Item

This exceptional pair of armchairs was crafted in a cabinetmaker's workshop in Italy in the 1940s. The design is attributed to architect and designer Carlo Enrico Rava. The high level of craftsmanship and the distinctive, sculptural quality of the design are consistent with Rava's work from this period. The chairs originally formed part of a private residence near Modena, Italy. The sculptural frame is defined by its rounded, organic silhouette, created by the continuous flowing line of the armrest and back legs. The tapered front legs, armrests, and back legs are made of solid walnut wood. The meticulous upholstery features horizontal channel tufting, adding a refined, three-dimensional effect to the design. The chairs have been newly upholstered in an ivory-white chenille jacquard fabric with an abstract, organic swirl pattern. The chenille yarn lends a soft, velvety texture to the surface. Brass button cap fittings on the frame provide a subtle, elegant finishing detail. The chairs have been fully restored and newly upholstered. Minor signs of wear consistent with age and use remain visible on the wooden parts. Other Italian Modern designers working in the same era include Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, Carlo Mollino, Campo & Graffi, Guglielmo Ulrich and Melchiorre Bega.
