About the Item

A handsome example of a 19th Century Italian fauteuil, this armchair dates to the Louis Philippe period and demonstrates the form at its most characteristic: a tall, arched back with a generous rounded crest, scrolled arm terminals, and elegantly curved sabre-style front legs with restrained carved detail at the knee. The frame is fashioned from warm-toned fruitwood, most likely walnut or cherrywood, with a naturally developed patina consistent with age and use. The serpentine apron and gently flared legs speak to the lingering influence of the Louis XV manner. The high back reclines using the two metal handles under each arm to give the chair a variety of comfortable positions. The reclining back mechanism, a defining feature of the Voltaire type, remains present and functional. The current upholstery is a flame-stitch or bargello-patterned textile in coral, ochre, olive, and sage, its energetic zigzag rhythm providing lively contrast to the quieter warmth of the wood. Brass nailhead trim outlines the seat, back, and arm pads throughout, adding period-appropriate finish. Well-suited to a study, library, or drawing room, this chair offers genuine period character and modern comfort.
