About the Item

Armchair in solid oak, the continuously curved and gently arched crest rail terminating in carved square corner blocks with applied foliate ornament, supported by vertical back splats flanked by uprights carved with elongated organic volutes, the seat upholstered in tan leather, raised on square tapering legs with splayed sabre rear legs. The carved ornament — restrained yet unmistakably personal — reflects the mature decorative language of Denmark’s most original designer at the height of his powers. Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846–1908) occupies a singular position in Danish cultural history, included in the Danish Cultural Canon for a body of work that encompasses ceramics, furniture, graphic design, and architecture. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts yet consistently marginalised by its establishment, Bindesbøll found his true voice through craft — first in embroidery design, then ceramics, and ultimately across every discipline he touched. His ornamental language, rooted in a deep knowledge of classical antiquity, India and Japan yet entirely his own, placed him decisively ahead of his time. He is widely regarded as Denmark’s first designer in the modern sense — an artist for whom the boundary between fine and applied arts was simply irrelevant.
