About the Item

Dimensions - H: 38 in W: 25 in D: 24 1/4 in SH: 17 3/4 in A superb and authentic pair of 18th Century Period French Louis XVI carved walnut fauteuil armchairs, representing the restrained elegance and exceptional craftsmanship that define the finest seating produced during the reign of Louis XVI. Unlike later revival examples, these chairs possess all of the distinctive construction methods and refined proportions associated with true period furniture, making them highly desirable to collectors, designers, and enthusiasts of French decorative arts. Gracefully proportioned and beautifully sculpted, each fauteuil features the iconic oval medallion back, elegantly scrolling upholstered arm supports, and finely fluted tapering legs terminating in turned feet. Their balanced neoclassical design reflects the transition away from the exuberant Rococo movement toward the more architectural and symmetrical aesthetic inspired by the rediscovery of classical antiquity during the late eighteenth century. Constructed from richly patinated walnut, the frames have developed the warm color and mellow surface that only more than two centuries of careful preservation can produce. Every surface reveals subtle evidence of hand craftsmanship, from the gently carved moldings to the naturally aged finish that gives these chairs tremendous character and authenticity. One of the defining characteristics confirming their period construction is the presence of original eighteenth-century pinned joinery. Rather than relying on later machine methods, the mortise-and-tenon joints were secured using traditional wooden pins, a hallmark of genuine eighteenth-century French cabinetmaking. These details are highly prized by collectors and serve as tangible evidence of the chairs' authentic period origin. Equally significant are the original metal retaining clips located on the reverse of each oval back, designed to secure the upholstered inset back panels. These small forged metal retainers are entirely consistent with original eighteenth-century French fauteuil construction and are an important feature often missing or replaced during later restorations. Their survival further reinforces the authenticity and originality of this remarkable pair. The chairs have been professionally reupholstered in an elegant deep red hybrid silk fabric decorated with a repeating dragonfly motif, providing a tasteful balance between historic elegance and contemporary sophistication. The rich crimson textile beautifully complements the warm walnut frames while adding visual interest through the refined embroidered dragonfly pattern. Brass upholstery tacks along the armrests provide an additional layer of traditional craftsmanship and complete the presentation with understated luxury. The generous, comfortably proportioned seats and supportive oval backs make these fauteuils not only beautiful decorative objects but also practical seating suitable for everyday use. Whether placed in a formal living room, library, study, bedroom, entry hall, or flanking a fireplace, they effortlessly elevate any interior with unmistakable French sophistication. The Louis XVI style remains one of the most enduring and sought-after periods in French furniture history. Emerging during the latter half of the eighteenth century, it reflected the influence of Greco-Roman architecture and emphasized clean lines, symmetry, restrained ornamentation, and exceptional craftsmanship. Oval medallion backs, fluted legs, and elegant geometric proportions became defining characteristics that continue to influence luxury furniture design today. Authentic eighteenth-century seating has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly in true pairs that retain their original structural integrity while remaining ready for immediate use. These chairs beautifully embody the timeless refinement of French neoclassicism while offering collectors an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire genuine Louis XVI period furniture. The pair is in good antique condition with the exception of some light surface scratches, Minor finish loss and normal age related wear and minor restoration. As to be expected with items from the 1700's If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out and ask! - D&P Luxuries
