About the Item

This exceptional pair of armchairs is attributed to Karl Hoffmann and Felix Augenfeld and can be situated within the context of Viennese modern design of the early 1930s. The chairs reflect the close relationship between architecture, interior design, and furniture that defined the Wiener Moderne of the interwar period. The design is characterized by a clear and balanced structure, with carefully proportioned elements that convey both restraint and presence. The solid wood frames, crafted in cherrywood, emphasize the architectural quality of the chairs, while the newly upholstered seats and backrests provide a refined contrast between structure and comfort. A closely related chair appears in a documented historical interior photograph from the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna), depicting the residence of Muriel Gardiner, designed in 1927 by Karl Hoffmann and Felix Augenfeld. This reference, together with comparable designs by Otto Prutscher from around 1930, supports both the stylistic attribution and the dating of the present pieces. The chairs embody the intellectual clarity and material sensitivity characteristic of Viennese design of the period and function equally well in historically informed interiors or as striking accents in contemporary settings. The pair has been professionally restored and newly upholstered, and remains in excellent condition. © MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst
