About the Item

A rare and special pair of armchairs, made by Móveis Cimo. Made at the end of 1940s, there are not many around nowadays as this design was produced in small quantities. The seat and back rest are made with a single sheet of curved Imbúia plywood (Brazilian Wallnut) The structure of the chair is made of Açoita Cavalo wood ('horse whip’), from a tree from the south of Brazil, where Cimo factory was. These chairs are of an unusual beauty. Simple, but also an elegant language achieved, pushing the boundaries of the material. An Alvar Aalto influence. The surfaces have normal blemishes & marks due to age of the piece, but overall the wood is in very good condition. Móveis Cimo furniture was founded in 1921 in Rio Negrinho, first created to reuse leftover walnut from the family sawmill that produced boxes. From then on, CIMO developed interesting furniture to fill the furniture vacuum that existed in the country. At the time, there were no companies that produced good quality furniture on an industrial scale. In its heyday, between the 1940s and 1960s, Móveis Cimo manufactured 10,000 solid wood chairs per month, sold throughout Brazil. The company closed in 1982.

Organic Shape Chair by Móveis Cimo, Ivory Wood, Mid-Century Modern

Small curved chair with organic shaped ivory wood base, 'Pau Marfim'. Brazil, 1950s. The wooden frame is really eye catching; the organic shape frame is divided into three parts, with beautiful rounded edges and curves. There are some minor marks of wear and age, normal in a vintage piece, but frame is in excellent condition. The slightly angled back and seating appear to float on the frame. This chair design is very unique, and at the same time, very ergonomic: The seat and backrest provide a very comfortable seating experience. New upholstery in a light green zigzag fabric.
