About the Item

Fine pair of British Regency chairs with caned seats; the turned back has a turned crest rail; the centre oval tablet on the back is decorated. With a shell and foliate scroll, supported and joined with a pair of "C" scrolls. Four saber legs complete the design. Excellent all original condition; the caned seats have been redone at some point, circa 1810. There are an additional identical two pairs of these chairs in comparable condition available to make a set of six if desired. (See image). Dimensions: (each chair) 21 7/8" wide x 23" deep x 32 3/4" high. Seat height 16 1/2". Provenance: Devenish and Company (Tom Devenish Collection). Thomas Devenish was a world renowned and iconic New York City dealer/collector and a 50 year "staple" at 929 Madison Avenue, N.Y.C. from the 1950's through 2002. His inventory symbolized the highest quality of form, rarity, and beauty, . His eye and taste along with his scholarship set him apart from his contemporaries and "Thomas Devenish" provenance continues to be sought after to this day. In addition to famous luminaries and foreign and domestic dignitaries; his extensive clientele also included the world's leading decorators and designers in the antiques "cognoscente".
