About the Item

A rare surviving, late 18th century Orkney chair, primitively constructed from a mix of beautifully patinated pine and fruitwood timber. Featuring an unusual and original panelled back - not a later, less-skilled replacement for a damaged straw back, typically seen. The naivety of the craftsmanship would suggest that the piece was likely estate made by, or for, an individual crofter rather than the product of a workshop. Boasting numerous characterful, historic repairs, this vernacular piece originates from the Orkney archipelago, off the northwestern coast of Scotland. A craft dating back hundreds of years and varying from maker-to-maker - the chair was designed low to the ground to avoid smoke from the open fires, with the winged back providing warmth and shelter from the wild island weather. Scottish, c. 1780.
