About the Item

Born in La Spezia in 1939, Gaetano Pesce spent six decades dismantling the conventions of Italian design from his studios in Venice, Paris and finally New York. Trained as an architect, he refused the rationalism that dominated post-war Italian furniture, working instead with poured resin, polyurethane foam and synthetic felts. Each piece was conceived as a one-off act of resistance to industrial uniformity — humanist, anthropomorphic, and unapologetically political .Pesce's seating remains among the most collected of any 20th-century Italian designer, with major holdings at MoMA New York, the Centre Pompidou Paris, the Vitra Design Museum and the Triennale di Milano. This 2018 example continues his lifelong dialogue between sculptural form and the seated body — an object that, in Pesce's words, "carries the trace of the hand that made it."
