The bench is particularly notable for its original brass plaque, which reads "FABRICATION DES BRASSERIES DE CHAMPIGNEULLES (M. & M.)," indicating that it was crafted for or by the Brasserie Champineulles, located in the Grand Est region, a newly created region formed by the merger of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine. The "(M. & M.)" likely refers to the initials of the brewery's owners or manufacturers at the time. Built in 1897, Brasserie Champigneulles is the oldest brewery in France, making this piece not only a functional object but also a rare piece of industrial history. It is likely that this bench was once part of the brewery's furnishings, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a historical French brewery. According to the legend of St. Arnold, patron saint of Lorraine’s brewers, around the year 640, thirsty pilgrims transporting his relic discovered barrels filled with cervoise or barley beer right on the site where Brasserie Champigneulles stands. Well established, it has a long-standing reputation. It was Tour de France’s official sponsor during the 1950s and 1960s, and sponsor of the 1968 Olympic Games.
