This listing is for 1 single piece of chair : A second identical chair is available, visible in our other sales, or available here as a second piece : Tolix Modernist Armchair — France, circa 1930–1950 One (of a pair of) authentic vintage chair, Art Deco, Modernist, Bauhaus, Constructivist, from the early times of modernism : a simple curved black rusted and lacquered tubular metal structure, with a rare creamy butter color wooden back and seating area, in the spirit of the iconic models by René Herbst and Marcel Breuer, Produced by Tolix, France 1930. Rare modernist armchair in tubular metal by Tolix, combining a brown-patinated steel frame with butter-yellow lacquered wooden slats displaying a particularly attractive degree of age-related wear. The model is distinguished by the singularity of its design, notably its large, sweeping armrests, which give the chair a sculptural presence and considerable visual strength. Its age is immediately apparent in the quality of its deeply time-worn patina, enhancing both its authenticity and character. Its highly graphic design, based on the continuous use of tubular metal, rounded angles and deliberately pared-back construction, places it firmly within the explorations of the Modern Movement and the functionalist aesthetic associated with the Bauhaus. The structure recalls the experiments in tubular furniture undertaken during the 1920s and 1930s by designers such as Marcel Breuer, whose work helped establish tubular metal as one of the defining materials of modern design, as well as René Herbst, a major figure of French Modernism and a leading advocate of rational furniture making extensive use of metal. In this context, this Tolix armchair offers a more industrial and expressive French interpretation of these principles: a clear, almost architectural construction combined with butter-yellow lacquered wooden elements in a rare, authentic and distinctly early colour, whose warm patina contrasts beautifully with the sobriety of the metal frame. The chair retains a particularly decorative original patina, with traces of use, areas of wear and losses to the lacquer that contribute to its character and bear witness to its history. An appealing piece both as a functional chair and as a sculptural element in a modernist, brutalist or contemporary interior.
