About the Item

It is the chair that defied gravity. In 1957, Gio Ponti famously tested the Superleggera by tossing it from a fourth-story window, watching it float to the ground. This poetic demonstration was not merely theatrical—it was proof of an obsession. Ponti spent years refining this design with Cassina, paring away every superfluous gram until only essence remained. The result is a masterpiece of structural minimalism: a chair that weighs just 1.7 kilograms, yet supports a full-grown adult with serene confidence. The silhouette is unmistakably Ponti. The slender, triangular-section ash legs taper to a needle-fine point, while the rattan seat—tightly woven in traditional ladder-back pattern—provides a delicate yet resilient platform. The frame is jointed with microscopic precision, the geometry so refined that it reads as a line drawing inhabiting space. It is furniture reduced to calligraphy. This particular example bears the original Cassina label, a detail of profound importance to the serious collector. The label confirms not only authenticity but a specific moment in production history—when Ponti’s vision met Cassina’s exceptional handcraft. The chair presents in beautiful vintage condition, with a warm, ambered patina to the seat that only time can impart. The seat weave remains taut and sound. There is an untouched, unvarnished quality here that restoration would only erase. In an age of weight and excess, the Superleggera stands as a quiet manifesto. Lightness as luxury. Simplicity as sophistication. A chair to be admired, used, and passed forward—still floating, after all these years.
