Barney's stools in clear maple, cast aluminum and mohair, Jordan Mozer, USA, 1992 Stools created for Barney's at 61st and Madison in New York. Clear maple, patinated recycled cast aluminum, 100% wool mohair upholstery, by Jordan Mozer (b.1958). Prototypes for Fred's at Barney's New York. Provenance: collection of the artist. Signed. The stools are 30” high x 17 ”deep x 17 ” wide (76 cm high x 43 cm deep x 43 cm wide). Materials and methods The feet and foot rests were hand carved in maple, and then cast in 93% recycled magnesium-aluminum alloy, polished and rubbed with elixirs to patina. The frame is composed of maple. The seat is upholstered in 100% deep ruby wool mohair. The story These stools were created in 1992 for Fred Pressman's eponymous restaurant at Barney's Department Store at 61st and Madison in Manhattan. By the opening of Fred’s, Pressman, the son of Barney's founder, transformed his father's shoe store into the most luxurious department store in the United States. Fred's was conceived as a restaurant and fine food emporium, created in collaboration with Chefs Pino Luongo and Marta Pulini for the opening of Barneys New York. The stool was inspired by midcentury Milanese design. The design included a cheese shop curated by Steven Jenkins, a wine bar where the stools were placed, a bakery, and a restaurant. Small batch studio furnishings Mozer Studios LLC handcrafts all of their small batch products. They are never mass produced. We invite our patrons to embrace the nuanced irregularities of the form, surface and finishes as evidence of handwork, defining each piece as one of a kind.
